Bio
Will Straw is Professor in the Department of Art History and Communications Studies at McGill University, where he also serves as department Chair. He is the author of Cyanide and Sin: Visualizing Crime in 50s America, and the co-editor of several volumes, including Circulation in the City: Essays on Urban Culture, Bâtir : The Intermedial City, Accounting for Culture and the Cambridge Companion to Pop and Rock. Dr. Straw is the author of over one hundred articles on cinema, music, newspapers and urban culture.
Will Straw est professeur dans le département d’Histoire de l’Art et d'Études de Communication, à l’Université McGill. Il assure la fonction de directeur du département. Il a publié Cyanide and Sin: Visualizing Crime in 50s America. Il a co-dirigé plusieurs volumes dont Circulation in the City: Essays on Urban Culture, Bâtir : The Intermedial City, Accounting for Culture et The Cambridge Companion to Pop and Rock. Il a publié plus de cent articles sur le cinéma, la musique, la presse et la culture urbaine.
Research Project / Projet de recherche
Dr. Straw’s current research involves several projects. One is on the history of sensational newspapers and their coverage of crime in Montreal and Mexico City, with a special emphasis on the visual rendering of criminality. A parallel project concerns the newsstand as an architectural and cultural form within Canadian life. Straw is also preparing a book-length study of the early 20th century New York periodical Broadway Brevities and the publishing milieu from which it came. Additional projects focus on the material culture of popular music.
En ce moment Will Straw poursuit plusieurs projets de recherche. L’un d’entre eux porte sur l’histoire des journaux à sensation et sur leur traitement du crime à Montréal et à Mexico. L’accent est mis sur la manière visuelle de rendre la criminalité. Parallèlement, il fait des recherches sur le kiosque à journaux en tant que forme architecturale et culturelle dans la vie des Canadiens. Straw prépare aussi un ouvrage sur le tabloïd new-yorkais du début du 20e siècle, Broadway Brevities, et sur le milieu éditorial où il a surgi. D’autres projets se focalisent sur la culture matérielle de la musique populaire.
