JEAN-FRANÇOIS CÔTÉ
Bio
Jean-François Côté is Full Professor in the Sociology Department of the University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM). He specializes in cultural sociology and is particularly interested in the Americas. He has published books and articles on the theory of sociology, urban studies and the literature of the Americas. He has been a visiting professor to France, Mexico, Brazil and Austria. Currently, his research interests focus on intermediality in the theatre and theatricality at large within metropolitan contexts.
Jean-François Côté est professeur titulaire au Département de sociologie de l'UQAM. Il se spécialise dans le domaine de la sociologie de la culture, et porte un intérêt particulier à la question des Amériques. Il a publié des ouvrages et articles sur la théorie sociologique, les études urbaines et les littératures américaines. Il a été professeur invité en France, au Mexique, au Brésil et en Autriche. Il poursuit présentement des recherches sur l'intermédialité au théâtre et sur la théâtralité au sens large dans les
contextes métropolitains.
Research Project / Projet de recherche
Over the course of the 20th century, the theatrical medium has undergone multiple transformations; the avant-gardes in particular have questioned fundamental categories, such as that of the "character", the "scene" or "the action, through experimentation. In addition, points of reference, within contemporary experiences of theatre, have evolved due to the integration of other media (cinema, video, etc) and the transformation of "representational" practices. Similarly, recent decades have been marked by the emergence of a "postcolonial" theatre. These recent practices bring to the fore questions of interaction between the theatre and the social and cultural transformations of our present societies, pointing to a political activism which takes up the great questionings of our era. By probing the links between theatricality, city and media, all these questions find themselves mirrored in the theatrical practices of our metropoles. These concerns stand at the centre of my research and, more particularly, of the Monteal-based project Médialités urbaines/Urban medialities.
Le médium théâtral a connu de multiples transformations au cours du 20ème siècle, à travers les expérimentations des avant-gardes, qui ont remis en question ses catégories fondamentales (comme celles de «personnage», de «scène» et d'«action»). Au surplus, les expériences contemporaines du théâtre ont fait évoluer ses repères, en y intégrant d'autres média (cinéma, vidéo, etc.), et en transformant ses manières de «représenter». Également, a émergé depuis quelques décennies un théâtre «postcolonial» qui remet de l'avant les possibilités d'interaction du théâtre avec les transformations sociales et culturelles que connaissent nos sociétés, en alimentant un activisme politique en lien étroit avec des grandes questions de l'heure. Ce sont toutes ces questions qui se retrouvent dans les pratiques théâtrales de nos métropoles, en mettant en cause les liens entre théâtralité, ville et médias, et qui se retrouvent au cœur des recherches que je mène, particulièrement à Montréal, dans le cadre du projet Médialités urbaines/Urban medialities.
